Normally, the body filters uric acid through the kidneys and into the urine. If you consume too much purine in your diet, or if your body can’t get rid of this byproduct fast enough, uric acid can build up in your blood.

Uric acid: what you need to know

Uric acid is produced during the breakdown of a type of chemicals known as purines, which are found in foods such as liver, herring, anchovies and sardines. Some vegetables and milk also contain purines. However, research has shown that these do not affect the health of the body or increase the risk of gout.

Uric acid is ‘recycled’ when cells die and helps protect blood vessels. The kidneys are responsible for filtering uric acid from the blood and excreting it in the urine. It is also released in small amounts to the feces. When the body builds up too much uric acid, it builds up in the joints, tendons and internal organs such as the kidneys.

Elevated uric acid levels play an essential role in the development of a condition known as gout, but not all people contract gout this way (it can also be a result of hypertension, or heart or kidney disease).

There are many possible causes of elevated uric acid levels: from heredity to obesity, excessive alcohol consumption or a diet high in “bad” purines. Diuretic drugs, radiation treatments, chemotherapy, hyperthyroidism, psoriasis, and immune-suppressing drugs can also be responsible for high levels of uric acid.

It’s important to know that elevated uric acid levels don’t cause any symptoms initially.

Recipes and home treatments for reducing or neutralizing uric acid

After lunch and dinner, eat an apple (red or green)  and leave the skin on (wash it well beforehand). Make this a habit to keep your body healthy. The skin of an apple is rich in vitamin C, and apples also contain healthy acids, such as malic acid, which detoxify the body and eliminate uric acid naturally.

Drink two tablespoons of cherry juice every day. Cherry juice contains, among other things, flavonoids, which give the cherries their red color and help to expel uric acid from the body.

Watch out for foods high in purines, such as red meat (including pork and lamb), beans, and alcoholic beverages. Reduce use to once a week and replace with foods low in fat and purines, such as cooked rice, bread, cottage cheese or natural yogurt.

Drink at least eight glasses of water every day  to provide yourself with a huge pile of essential minerals and to expel toxins and bacteria. Your kidneys need a lot of water to work efficiently. Too much salt and caffeine has the opposite effect and should be avoided.

Completely detoxify your body about every two months. This helps rid your body of the crystals created by uric acid. Make a mixture of half a tablespoon of baking soda in a quarter of a liter of water and drink it eight times a day.

This is not recommended for people with high blood pressure or heart problems.

Eat more artichoke! This vegetable has excellent diuretic properties to naturally reduce and neutralize uric acid. There are hundreds of different recipes for enjoying artichoke, but it’s best to cook and eat them and drink the cooking water.

Onions

Onions are guaranteed to be one of the many foods that can help you eliminate uric acid.  They detoxify the body and prevent many health problems. Cook two peeled and coarsely chopped onions.

Add the juice of a lemon and drink a few glasses every day.

Strawberries are an excellent remedy for fighting gout and for reducing uric acid. You can make a tea from the leaves and roots or just eat more strawberries every day.

Potassium

Make sure to include foods high in potassium in your diet, as potassium supports the kidneys and prevents crystals from forming due to elevated uric acid levels. Include bananas, leafy greens (spinach, chard), raisins, prunes, potatoes, watermelon, strawberries and apricots in your diet. It is also preferable to eat more complex carbohydrates, such as those found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Limit or avoid foods sweetened with fructose or high-fructose corn syrup,  which can increase uric acid levels. Fructose can be found in soda and other drinks (and even in certain juices). Rather choose water or natural juices without additives.

Use apple cider vinegar as an addition and as a dressing for salads. According to many studies, this reduces uric acid, thanks to the high concentrations of acetic acid and potassium. In addition to using it as a food, you can also mix two tablespoons of vinegar in a glass of cold water and drink it twice a day.

Protein

Avoid high-protein diets, especially if they’re aimed at weight loss. This can cause an increase in uric acid levels. A healthy diet combined with exercise is better for weight loss.
