3 cups of coffee a day: is it healthy?

Many studies confirm that drinking coffee every day (in moderation, of course) is beneficial for your health. Many people have been avoiding coffee for years. They do so because of the belief that the caffeine is harmful to your health.

However, every year new studies confirm that drinking coffee is actually good for you.

Several studies have indicated that coffee has positive effects in treating and preventing health problems such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Parkinson’s

New studies are revealing more and more benefits and great reasons to drink this drink. A study conducted by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda (Maryland, US) and published in Hepatology  showed that drinking coffee has positive effects on the liver.

To conduct their research, scientists used data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2010). She selected 29,793 participants aged 20 years and older.

Volunteers completed a questionnaire about their coffee drinking habits. Scientists also examined their blood. Several components of liver function were measured. The reason for this study was to measure the health of the participants’ livers.

The following was discovered:

  • Those who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had lower enzyme levels in their liver compared to those who didn’t drink it.

Scientists found that other components in coffee (besides caffeine) promote liver health when consumed in moderation.

Reduce your risk of fatty liver and fibrosis with coffee

Fatty Liver

Another study also published in Hepatology found that drinking this drink reduces the risk of build-up of connective tissue in the liver (fibrosis) in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The research found that the caffeine in coffee can reduce the build-up of connective tissue. This applies to people who suffer from chronic liver diseases, such as fibrosis.

To conduct their research, scientists interviewed 306 individuals about their caffeine consumption. They then divided them into 3 groups:

  • People without signs of fibrosis during the study (the control group).
  • Patients with steatosis.
  • People with non-alcoholic steatosis stages 0-1 and 2-4.

Patients with steatosis who drank coffee showed a significant difference compared to stage 0-1 non-alcoholic steatosis patients.

Consumption of stage 0-1 non-alcoholic steatosis was higher than that of stage 2-4 patients. Regular consumption was 58% and 36% respectively.

Experts say more research is needed to determine the amount needed to have an impact on clinical outcomes.
